The city is a constantly rewriting public space that we collectively create and share. It offers both its visible and invisible face and encompasses historical artifacts as well as visions of the future. For Romanian visual artist Lucian Sandu-Milea, the city is a dynamic source of inspiration and challenge. Lucian drew inspiration from the concept of a palimpsest, a manuscript reused after the original text has been erased,.
Lucian sees the transformation of the city itself as a palimpsest or a Möbius strip, demonstrating the concept of continuity, transformation, and the interplay between the past, present, and future. What creates the typology of cities? It is precisely the way they overlay historical layers, regenerate, and create an environment for the continuous cycle of life.
The Möbius strip can be understood as an infinite loop symbolizing the rewriting of the city and the process of urban transformation. Similarly, the palimpsest captures layers of history, memory, and cultural imprints and is open to new inscriptions. In the context of the site-specific drawing installation created directly for Altán Klamovka, Lucian creates an environment of rewriting the city as a process of urban transformation. The interactive installation invites viewers to reinterpret hidden layers, rewrite, and engage with the history, culture, and social dynamics of the city. Visitors are encouraged to participate using UV light to uncover urban stories. By illuminating the canvas, they reveal new dimensions and perceptions of the city At the same time, they can create fleeting light drawings on phosphorescent painted areas of the canvas, actively becoming part of the artistic process
